How Do I Finish Well?

What does finishing well look like?

Proverbs 20:29 (NIV)
29 "The glory of young men is their strength, gray hair the splendor of the old."

Proverbs 22:6 (NIV)
6 "Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it."

  • Finishing well means living wisely over the long haul.
  1. The life of wisdom begins and ends with the fear of the Lord.

Proverbs 1:7a (NIV)
7a "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge..."

Proverbs 9:10-11 (NIV)
10 "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. 11 For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life."

Proverbs 10:27 (NIV)
27 "The fear of the Lord adds length to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short."

Ecclesiastes 12:12b-14 (NIV)
12b "Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body. 13 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil."

  • What is the fear of the Lord?
  • The awe-inspired surrender to God.
  1. The life of wisdom looks like the cross.

1 Corinthians 1:18-25 (CEB)
18 “The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are being destroyed. But it is the power of God for those of us who are being saved. 19 It is written in scripture: 'I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will reject the intelligence of the intelligent.’ 20 Where are the wise? Where are the legal experts? Where are today’s debaters? Hasn’t God made the wisdom of the world foolish? 21 In God’s wisdom, he determined that the world wouldn’t come to know him through its wisdom. Instead, God was pleased to save those who believe through the foolishness of preaching. 22 Jews ask for signs, and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified, which is a scandal to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles. 24 But to those who are called—both Jews and Greeks—Christ is God’s power and God’s wisdom. 25 This is because the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.”

"Discipleship is quite simply extended training in being dispossessed. To become followers of Jesus means that we must, like him, be dispossessed of all that we think gives us power over our own lives and the lives of others."   - Stanley Hauerwas

His final words were shared on his behalf by his family:
“Dear Friends, this is to say a final goodbye. First my incredible thanks for your prayers, love and holding on with me to that fingernail miracle. Words cannot express the depth, breadth, and height of my gratitude, but I have gone home. My earnest prayer is that your faith and tenacity on my behalf will not be considered a pointless religious exercise, but that it will have strengthened your faith in God who is marvelous, mysterious and majestic in all that He does: The Faithful One...” – Joel Edwards

  1. The life of wisdom requires the Spirit of grace.

Ephesians 5:15-21 (CEB)
15 "So be careful to live your life wisely, not foolishly. 16 Take advantage of every opportunity because these are evil times. 17  Because of this, don’t be ignorant, but understand the Lord’s will. 18 Don’t get drunk on wine, which produces depravity. Instead, be filled with the Spirit in the following ways: 19  speak to each other with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs; sing and make music to the Lord in your hearts; 20 always give thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; 21  and submit to each other out of respect for Christ."

  • As we grow in Christ, we become more dependent not less dependent on the Holy Spirit.
